Environmental Guidelines

By following these simple guidelines, you can help reduce the impact on the environment, minimize the possibility of animal suffering and stress, and encourage respect and appreciation of other cultures and traditions.

  1. Campsite - These campsites are simple and have basic facilities. Do not expect any luxury. Remember that another group will be using the same campsite after you leave. Take all possible care to leave the site cleaner than you found it.

  2. Basic neccessities - Campsites may keep stock of some basic items like aluminium cooking utensils, rustic cots (made of bamboo or firewood) and may be a few other essential things. Enquire about these in advance.

  3. Do not fuel the fire - Always discard matches and cigarettes with great care at the campsite. Also, keep the use of wood for fuel to a minimum. When possible take kerosene or an alternative fuel source for cooking and heating purposes.

  4. Remove litter - Burn or bury paper and carry out all non-degradable litter.

  5. Keep local water clean - Avoid using pollutants such as detergents in streams or springs. Water is a critical item. Its availability differs from camp to camp, and should not be taken for granted. Trekkers either have to depend on the water they bring themselves, or make arrangement with the Group Leader for additional requirement at the camp for cooking, bathing, etc.

  6. Nature's call - A crowbar will be available to make cat-holes required to attend to nature's call. One or two cat-holes (8 inch diameter, 2 feet deep pits) are required to be dug near the camps for each group. After using it, throw in the toilet paper if any, cover the cat-hole by pushing in some soil into the pit. Attending nature's call elsewhere is prohibited.

  7. If no toilet facilities are available, make sure you are at least 30 meters away from water sources and bury or cover waste.

  8. Plants should be left to flourish - Taking sapling cuttings, seeds and roots is illegal in many parts of the sanctuary. Also remember that trade in many wildlife products is strictly illegal.

  9. When taking photographs - Respect privacy. Ask for permission and use restraint.

  10. Consumption of alcohol is not allowed.

  11. Trekkers should not venture beyond the campsite boundaries after dark. Campfire is permissible only inside the camp boundary and that too only if approved by the group leader or the guide.
