Eco-Trek: Bedaguli to Jodigere to Bylore

Trek-in-brief: This is a two day trek. The trek starts from Bedaguli. After about three kms of walking you will find a two faced rudraksh tree, a rarity, in a place called Kendemaradapala. An ascent starts and you have to pass through research plantations, wet decidous and shola forests. Halt of the first day at Jodigere in a pucca building being used as an anti-poaching camp. Second day you will travel towards Triple point. This point is a cairran made on the ridge line dividing the three forest divisions of Chamarajanagar, Kollegal and Sathyamangalam. From here a valley is crossed and you reach Bettadahalla. Walking all along the boder of Karnataka and Tamilnadu you will see one of the most beautiful and rich forests in the whole world. You will reach Bylore after walking for 13 kms from Jodigere.



Difficulty level: Difficult



Must watch or know about:
  • Leeches - There are many of these on the entire route. One has to be aware of them.
  • Kendemaradapala - A rare tree bearing two-faced rudraksh.
  • A brush with history when you visit the Sharavana's fort, where you can observe very old relics (more than 500 years old).
  • Visit Bellimuriyare (in Tamil nadu). This place has rocks formed in a peculiar manner and hollowness of these rocks were used to make silver bracelets in the past.
  • Beetekan - An unbelievably beautiful and rich forest full of rosewood on the Karnataka-Tamilnadu border.
  • Observe lush green grasslands, shola and evergreen forests
  • You maybe able to see wild elephants in large herds. Pay attention to the bewildering range of flora and fauna.


Route details:

First day: Bedaguli - Kendemaradapala - Jodigere (first day halt in the evening)

Second day: Triple point - Bettadahalla - Beetekan - Bylore



Schedule:

Day one: Start from Bedaguli at 2:30PM. Trek to Jodigere. Time to be taken is three hours of trek to reach and halt at Jodigere.

Day two: Departure from Jodigere at 8:30AM. Five hours of trekking to reach Bylore. Either a night halt or dispersal as circumstances demand.



Distances and Duration:

Number of days: Two days

Number of night halts: One night at Jodigere. If needed extra night halt at Bylore.

Total distance to be trekked: 22 kms

Distance to be covered on the first day: Nine kms - from Bedaguli to Jodigere

Distance to be covered on the second day: Thirteen kms - from Jodigere to Bylore



Facilities: One gets to stay at Bedaguli in the Forest department's guest house. At Jodigere, there is a forest department guest house with bare minimum facilities. Your first day halt will be here. Boarding and lodging is provided by the Forest department on payment according to the tariff.



How to reach Bedaguli (the start point):

From Bangalore: Travel to Chamarajanagar by bus - 210 kms

From Mysore: Travel to Chamarajanagar by bus - 65 kms

From Chamarjanagar: Travel to Bedaguli by bus - 65 kms.

There are two buses scheduled to ply from Chamarajanagar to Bedaguli. One departs at 1:30PM and reaches Bedaguli at 4:30PM. The other departs at 2:30PM and reaches Bedaguli at 5:30PM. Enthusiasts are advised to stay overnight at the Bedaguli forest guest house available on prior booking to start the ensuing trek the next day on time. If you have your own transportation then from Chamarajanagar take the Sathyamangalam (Sathy) road to reach Punjur gate. From Punjur gate take a deviation to reach Bedaguli Forest guest house



How to depart from Bylore (the end point):

To Mysore: Travel to Kollegal and then to Mysore by bus - 120 kms

To Bangalore: Travel to Kollegal to Bangalore by bus - 200 kms

To Chamarjanagar: Travel to Kollegal and then to Chamarajanagar - 95 kms
